Power System Design Fall 2000

On-Campus students:

Lance Kohman
Hi, my name is Lance. I will be graduating in May with dual Bachelors degrees in Electrical and Mechanical engineering with an emphasis in power. The biggest thing for me right now is trying to find a job for next May. It seems that is how I spend most of my free time! I also go to all of K-State's home football games with my family.

Richard Markley
Mikha Mazen

Laure Mora

My name is Laure, I am 23 years old and I come from France. I was there in an engineering school for two years and I decided to spend my third year in an exchange program, that's why I am here with you today. It is the first time that I have come to the United States and I like to be here very much. It's always interesting and funny to discover another culture, another way of life, which is very different from the European one! When I don't work, I like to play the piano and do some sport, and of course go in the evening to the bars in Manhattan..!

Off-Campus Students:

Peter Bernard, Belchertown, MA

My name is Pete Bernard. I live in Belchertown, Massachusetts which is located 70 miles west of Boston. I'm married and have three children ages 10, 8, and 6. I graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1989. My first job was with the Air Force. I served as a Lieutenant at Offutt AFB in Omaha, NE for three years. During that time, I was sent to Cairo Egypt for seven months during Desert Storm. My second job took me to Phoenix, AZ where I was an electrical engineer with the Leo A. Daly Company, an architectural-engineering firm, for one year. In 1993, I joined the Massachusetts Electric Company as an engineer. Presently I am filling in for the District Engineering Manager for the Western District (The area in red in the picture). I enjoy all sports especially soccer and basketball. My weekends are spent coaching and watching my kids play soccer and watching my favorite football teams, the New England Patriots and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. (I am probably the only Cornhusker fan in Massachusetts)

Paul De Andrea, Franklin, NY

My current assignment at New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) is in technical system operations. Our department is responsible for the maintenance, construction, protection and operation of 60 substations and the respective interconnecting 46 kV, 115 kV and 345 kV subtransmission and transmission system. Previous assignments have been in the customer services and planning departments of NYSEG. My undergraduate degree is a BSEE from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in 1975. I am a registered professional engineer in New York state.

Stacia Fugate, Mesa, AZ
Clinton Halley, Omaha, NE
Darren Kiekel, Houston, TX

Pactrick McAndrew, Loretto, PA
I am married with a seven month old daughter. My wife's name is Susan and my daughter's name is Sarah. I have held various positions in the power industry for the last twelve (12) years. I have worked for a power company as a Substation and Protection Engineer in Washington, DC for two years, and as an Engineer for a consulting firm for 1.5 years. For the last nine (9) years I have worked for the Pennsylvania Electric Co., which is now known as GPU Energy. I have held a number of positions such as distribution engineer, supervising engineer, and project coordinator/leader, which is my present position. I received my B.S. E.E. in 1988 from the Univ. of Pitts. at Johnstown, and I am registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania. I have also worked in three different power plants, and prior to attending college, I worked as a coal miner in an underground coal mine. Our company, GPU Energy, has recently announced that it will merge with First Energy out of Ohio. It is estimated that the approval process will take approximately one year and is supposed to be completed by the end of 2001. As most anyone in the utility industry is familiar with reorganizations, we are now in the process of going through our fifth reorganization in the last five years.

Guy Mode, North Hampton, MA
I've been working for National Grid Co. for about 7 years. My hobbies: WeightLifting, Jogging, VolleyBall

Muruganantham Palani, Plymouth, MN
I work for Open Systems International here in Minneapolis, MN. We specialize in EMS/SCADA. I am in EMS group. I work mostly in Network Analysis, AGC and DTS. I enjoy developing software for Power Systems Applications.

Roger Peterson, Omaha, NE
David Readio, Lawrence, KS
My cat Nikita, shown in the picture, is 6 months old. I currently work at the largest hydroelectric power plant in the State of Kansas, Bowersock Mills & Power Company. I have worked at this plant for almost 11 years and I have been Plant Manager for the past 3 years in which I try to keep the old equipment running. It is because of this job that I decided to go back to school and get my Masters in Electrical Engineering with a Power Systems emphasis. I graduated from KU in 1989 with my BSEE with a computer design emphasis, but I was hired by my current employer while I was a student at KU studying for an MBA and I found I enjoyed working with power systems more than building computers. I am a register Professional Engineer in the State of Kansas and I am Senior Member of the IEEE. I enjoy biking, camping, hiking and researching family history as well as local history. For more information on where I work please check out our web site at www.bowersockpower.com. My email address is DReadio@ieee.org

Jeffrey Steiner, Easthampton, MA
My name is Jeff Steiner and I am currently employed at Massachusetts Electric (A National Grid Company) as an engineer. I graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1998 which is located in New York. I have lived in New York for most of my life until I relocated to Massachusetts two years ago with my fiancée. I enjoy watching and playing various sports and in recent years I have been mountain biking with some co-workers through the hills of Massachusetts. This is my second class at Kansas State University and I am looking forward to another great semester.

Deborah Stephenson, Salt Lake City, UT
Fortunately, I was born with wanderlust, because by the time I graduated from high school, I had attended 12 schools. To complete my BA in Spanish, I attended 4 colleges, graduating from UC Riverside. Commissioned in the US Army as a WAC, I was privileged to serve in Iran and Germany. I transferred to the Signal Corps and fell in love with lambda. I was married at the time and my husband, Roy, was mature enough to handle it. He encouraged me to attain a BSEE from KU while he was working on his Ph.D. in History. We have two sons, Brian aged 21, and Andrew aged 17. Schools I have attended: Citrus College, UC Riverside, UCLA, U of Maryland European Division, KCKCC, KU, and National Defense University.
Exciting positions I have held: Company Commander for furthest eastern Defense Communications Station, Communications Officer for Intelligence US Army Europe, US Crisis Desk Information Systems Command, US Pacific Command Information Assurance Branch Chief, Astronaut and Flight Controller Instrumentation and Communications Instructor at Johnson Manned Space Flight Center, Math and Science Tutor for television shows, "Promised Land" and "Touched by an Angel", Senior Technical Writer for research and development for destruction of US Chemical weapons, Senior Technical Engineer at a small power plant for a mining company.
Memorable moments: Camping by Lake Lausanne, climbing Mount Golestan, floating on the Big Piney, visiting the Mosque in Esfahan, skiing up to the Eagle's Nest in Bavaria, diving with the sting rays in Sting Ray City, walking a lava tube on the Big Island, playing bridge in a hot springs, walking the Royal Mile in Edinburgh in heels in the rain, watching St. Paddy's Day Parade in Dublin, seeing Rodin's Thinker up close.
Doulas Young, Kansas City, Mo
I am what might be considered a "non-traditional" student and am probably older than most, if not all, of the students in the class. I have eight grandchildren!
I joined the US Air Force after high school to see the world. I was stationed in Mississippi and Texas. However, the Air Force sent me through an electronics school where I specialized in Air Traffic Control radar. I have worked on electronic instrumentation, industrial controls and in the heavy industrial electrical field since. I have tested, repaired and supervised maintenance on large horsepower motors (to 2500 horsepower) and switchgear to 13,000 volts. I now manage a maintenance department that employs 70+ personnel with an annual budget of $5,000,000.
I have completed most of my education going to school at nights. I am licensed as a PE and am a member of the IEEE. I am also a licensed Master Electrician and have taught classes about the National Electric Code at a local Junior College. I hope to continue teaching after I finish my master's degree.
