The Winter Meeting of the IEEE Power Engineering Society offers an outstanding opportunity for engineering students with an interest in electric power to interact with people representing the full spectrum of the field... from undergraduates to graduate students, to engineers representing every facet of the electric utility industry, to university faculty and researchers focusing on virtually every aspect of the endeavor. The interaction between industry leaders, professionals, faculty and students leads to relationships that spur future collaboration, industry advancement, and career opportunities.
Each morning at 7:00 a.m. a continental breakfast will be provided in Rhinelander-North, the Student Hospitality Room. This early-morning get-together provides an opportunity to develop new acquaintances and contacts, get an update on the day's activities and special opportunities, pick up tickets for the technical inspection tours and the Student-Faculty-Industry Luncheon, and resolve issues and questions.
A brief outline of the week's student activities is as follows.
Sunday:
Sunday is a day to get acquainted with fellow participants in the student program, with Manhattan and its modes of transportation, and with the week ahead. After assembling for breakfast and introductions at 9:00 a.m., you may choose to join (or lead) one of several groups heading out to various destinations in Manhattan. Later in the afternoon, attend the opening reception for Winter Meeting 2002.
Monday:
Tickets for inspection tours on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning and afternoon will be distributed on a first come basis at the student breakfast starting at 7:00 a.m. The Conference Program will open at 8:00 a.m. with a PES General Membership Meeting followed Plenary Session on emerging changes in the power industry. Following the afternoon sessions, committee meetings and inspection tours, many of the sponsored students will become presenters at the Student Poster-Paper Session and Contest. This will be a part of the Winter-Meeting Poster-Paper Session - a featured conference event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This is an excellent opportunity for the student, whether as author or reviewer, to discuss topics in his or her field of interest with other students, involved engineers, university professors, and industry management..
Tuesday:
There will be technical inspection tours organized for the students in the morning and in the afternoon. Parallel technical session and technical committee meeting provide a variety of alternative avenues of pursuit throughout the day.
Wednesday:
Wednesday features a full day of sessions for students, designed to explore the career opportunities offered by the power industry. The morning session will feature a panel of recent graduates now working in different facets of the power industry. An industry-sponsored luncheon follows, providing an opportunity to discuss career options with luncheon hosts. The keynote speaker will be a prominent engineer in the industry, sharing his insights on the technical challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the energy supply and distribution business. Roundtable discussions among students, faculty members and industry representatives follow in the early afternoon.
Thursday:
This is the last day of the conference. Students are encouraged to firm up the contacts that they have made over the week, and map out ways to keep in contact through collaboration, internships, research opportunities, etc. Students must check out of the Hilton Hotel by 12:00 noon on Thursday.
